Cheeseburger in Paradise Cruising Race
Race Organizers: Kate George, Scott Jones
Event support by APSC Race Director
Aquatic Park Sailing Club is organizing its second annual cruise/race to Wilson (Island Yacht Club), U.S.A., to correspond with their Cheerseburger in Paradise party weekend. Due to extreme weather in 2017, this year’s race will the first group sail (again weather permitting), although one intrepid sailor by the name of Scott Jones, did cross the lake in the cyclone conditions last year.
The plan is for this to be a laid-back race… In the words of our race director, a “cruiser/racer-partyer!” As such, it will be self-timed (details to follow) and not connected with any PHRF-LO performance ratings. More or less whoever gets there first, wins! There will be some prizes distributed as well. But the overall goal of the cruise-race is to get to the party, in a semi-organized fashion. Several of our members have attended this party weekend in the past on a repeat basis and assure us it is worth the trip.
Wilson lies approximately 29 nautical miles from Aquatic Park and at a rate of approximately five to six knots an hour, you should reach there within five to six hours, more if the wind does not cooperate. This will be on the honour system, so if you require engine propulsion, please retire yourself from the race.
***Please note: You are responsible for your own safety, the safety of your crew and the seaworthiness of your vessel. There will be no chase boats supplied. Coastguard monitors channel 16. Be sure you have all required safety equipment, including functioning running lights. We will help you with as much information as we can, but this is for reference only. Again, the skipper is responsible for vessel safety and has to be prepared for an international crossing. (See more details below.)
*For boats 30′ and over, there is an annual fee of $27.50 (US) that needs to be paid for a decal. The decal takes 4-6 weeks to process. So for this race, please have application in at least by the middle of June! Let’s say June 15, to be on the safe side. Here is the link:
https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-import-export/uftd-info
Boats under 30′ are exempt.
Boats22’ foot with less than 10 hp engine does not require a boat number, but a HIN.
We will be entering the United States. There are regulations and procedures pertaining to entry, which are pretty straightforward. Even if you have done this before, it is worth repeating. Process: check in at video phone ashore.
US Customs Requirements:
As a Canadian citizen, when you cross the Canada US border, you must report to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for inspection. You arrive in the United States when your vessel first comes to rest in US waters, whether at anchor or at a dock.
DOCUMENTS
If you are a Canadian citizen entering the United States by pleasure boat, you will need the following documentation:
