Sick Cormorants
All,
A number of you have reported seen some cormorants acting oddly lately. We’ve heard from the TRCA that this is due to an outbreak of Newcastle’s Disease in the colony. It affects the birds’ mobility and ability to fly, makes them less fearful of humans, and ultimately kills them.
It’s recommended that the birds be left alone, even when it’s obvious that they’re suffering. Handling the birds can be harmful. I hope it isn’t necessary, but if we encounter a carcass, we should bury it in a deep hole to prevent scavengers digging them up. Anyone moving carcasses should wear disposable gloves, use garbage bags (though don’t bury the bag), and equipment. Minimal handling of the carcasses is advised.Thoroughly wash hands with soap after the burial is complete. Tools such as shovels can be found in the motor shed, and a supply of garbage bags are in the left cabinet by the double doors in the clubhouse.
